The Complete Day Guide to Budapest

Ah, Budapest. It’s the Central European city. Gorgeous girls walk streets lined with romantic buildings, the food is incredible, there are countless things to see and do…it’s the kind of city you wish you never had to leave the moment you arrive. So make the best of it on your weekend and follow this guide for a good…no, great….scratch that – for a Grand time in Budapest.

The Sights

There’s almost no other city in Europe like Budapest that can boast such a diverse range of architectural styles. Art Nouveau buildings inspired by traditional Hungarian decorative designs, Transylvanian traditions and Far East styles are juxtaposed with Brutalist communist monuments in nearly every square and open space; sumptuous 16th and 17th century Turkish Baths sit just off the modern promenades lined with chic cafés along the Danube river…the very soul and philosophy of this grand city is reflected in its design. You could live here your entire life and still marvel every day at its magnificence – check out these activities that highlight the best the city has to offer in a short space of time on your weekend in Budapest.

City Tour – The sheer number of things to see in Budapest is astonishing. On foot you’ll never even see a tenth of what is on offer. Take a ride with us and let the physicality of the buildings be your guides and historians.

Caving – Not only is Budapest beautiful above ground, it’s also riddled with an impressive 20 kilometers of caves beneath the city streets. Seems a little unfair to other tourist destinations, that Budapest should be so cool. Carved out by the same springs that fuel the thermal baths, your party will explore parts of this massive cave system taking in the sights of stalactites and stalagmites and mineral deposits in a variety of shapes. For the more adventurous it’s also possible to visit some less touristy, natural areas of the cave for some real hardcore potholing.

Eating and Drinking

Budapest’s cuisine has earned it the reputation as one of the food capitals of the world. Situated at the crossroads of so many past cultures, its gastronomic tradition is as varied and rich as the history of the country. Our favourite places to brunch, lunch or take a break are:

2Spaghi – You can’t find better Italian food in Budapest. Styled on the lunch counters found throughout the Italian peninsula, these two Milanese guys serve up fresh, homemade pasta dishes every day to go or to eat on the spot in a feel-good atmosphere.

1075, Budapest, Gozsdu udvar

Bors Gastrobar – Situated right next to one of the best ruin pubs in Budapest, this is one of the best and most popular eateries for a lunchtime meal. Gourmet soups and sandwiches, imaginative pasta creations and more at fantastic prices will make you a regular upon your first visit.

Marika Néni Kávézója – 40 types of burgers, 7 sizes of buns (the largest of which looks like a deflated basketball), and a raucous atmosphere make this one of the best burger joints in the entire world. Not to be missed.

1094, Budapest, Angyal utca 28

First Strudel House of Pest Café & Restaurant – Cafes abound in this coffee-crazy city but the best place to try a traditional Hungarian pastry is here.

The Shopping

From upscale boutiques to unique shops featuring funky local designs and crafts, Budapest is a shopper’s paradise. Most of the high-end shops are located on the main streets that radiate out from the city centre. It’s on so-called Fashion Street, Deak Ferenc utca, where you’ll find shops like Hugo Boss and Lacoste. Andrassy Avenue features Louis Vuitton, Gucci and Roberto Cavalli. Budapest’s design street, Kiraly utca, boasts more local designs and funky boutiques. But check around, this city has something for everyone.

Great Market Hall – The largest indoor market in Budapest features a huge variety of stalls on three levels. A visit will last at least a couple of hours as everything from tasty food to traditional Hungarian souvenirs are for sale in this beautiful building.

Vamhaz krt. 1-3, Pest end of Liberty Bridge

Bomo Art – All things paper – from gorgeous leather-bound notebooks to some of the finest pulp products in the world – are on sale in this amazing little shop.
